HUZZAH! FREE TRADE AND SAILORS RIGHTS!
But instead American ships are captured and sailors impressed by the thousands into the British Navy, becoming slaves to the lash, while the United States has virtually no navy to back them up. Baltimore native, Nathan Jeffries, son of an American naval hero, Captain William Jeffries, and his Quaker wife, Amy, is haunted by the memories of his fiancee, his best friend, his enemy's woman and his betrayal. Chesapeake Bay is no refuge aboard his father's brig, Bucephalus; facing his worst fears, he is chased and captured by armed privateer schooner Scourge.
In a violent world at war, Nathan must break his most solemn promise to his mother. For Nathan and the young United States, 1812 would severely challenge rights of passage.

The hero is Nathan Jeffries. His father had been a naval hero, but his Quaker mother wanted a peaceful life for her golden boy. All that changed after the disastrous Embargo of 1807, and by 1812, Nathan has lost his freedom, his fiancee, his best friend and perhaps soon his life. The world was suddenly at war and Nathan lives in torment and fear.

The Jeffries' sworn enemy, Richard Auster, wanted Nathan to suffer final reprisal at sea, ruled by the British lion. But the enterprising Nathan finds a way to wage a war of his own.

1812 Rights of Passage The War of 1812 Trilogy Book 1 Bert J Hubinger eBook Reviews

Great dramatic story that includes naval history! The story of the Jeffries struggles and their comrades is riveting! Hubinger keeps me reading more about life at sea and on land in the United States during the years surrounding 1812.
No better timing for the release of this novel with the upcoming bicentennial of the war of 1812.

You can almost pick out any sentence in this maritime adventure and smell the salt air

"Every golden sail was set; the late ruddy light seemed to burnish faces and wood as it slanted across the deck. Light westerly airs washed over the starboard quarter, easing the ship along in an orderly fashion, her stern rising and falling sedately in the light, long, even swell."

Hubinger is very passionate about this war and his knowledge of it

"All hands were ready, and every man would be needed above deck. The six-pounders, port and starboard combined, were loaded, cartridges and shot in the racks, not yet run out; but it seemed like a futile gesture. Six little popguns, six-pounders, and not even enough hands to man them. They dare not let loose the prisoners to serve aloft or as gun crews. Meanwhile Scourge boasted 6 eighteen-pounder carronades in a broadside, twelve guns, possibly a swivel, and at least four times as many men."

Are you already getting a flavor? I love how all the naval language places you right into the scene.
Awesome....Felt like I was on board!!
